Background

Transboundary water management – policy tools from around the world

Setting the Research Agenda Critical Hydropolitics
The Geneva Water Hub, in collaboration with the Canton of Geneva's Water Office, studied the Greater Geneva region as a 'living lab' to explore the practical challenges and opportunities of transboundary water management between Switzerland and France.

In collaboration with the Canton of Geneva’s Water Office, the Geneva Water Hub explored the Greater Geneva region as a ‘living lab’ on the practical challenges and opportunities of transboundary water management. A transboundary territory sharing surface and groundwater, Switzerland and France have a long history of cooperation, and have developed as many as 40 different policy tools – many of which are innovative and bespoke to the region – in order to manage shared rivers, lakes and aquifers.

Based on this research, the Geneva Water Hub is exploring policy tools and mechanisms for water management in other basins, initiating a cross-cutting and comparative discussion with other regions internationally.  Work is in currently underway with partners in West Africa and in Australia.
